Recommendations on ripple mattress

Updated: 5 days ago

Alternating pressure ripple mattress is designed to provide a cyclical alteration in pressure through loading and unloading in a 1-in-2 or 1-in-3 manner. This specifications will help in redistribution of pressure and hence preventing bedsores. The PRESSURE 2 trial has shown that the overall rate of stage 2 or greater bedsores is low when using the alternating pressure ripple mattress. Results also showed that the use of alternating pressure ripple mattress is cost effective taking into consideration the cost and patient’s quality of life. There are two types of alternating pressure ripple mattress, which are the all-in-one piece bubble type mattress with cells and the separate tube mattress.

Table below shows patient’s criteria on choosing the right ripple mattress:

BUBBLE-TYPE RIPPLE MATTRESS

A bubble-type ripple mattress is ideal for patient with stage 1 bedsores and the prevention of bedridden patients at low risk of bedsores. Bubble-type ripple mattress generally composed of an all-in-one bubble cells with 1-in-2 alternating pressure distribution system. It is generally suitable for those with body weight 100 kg or less depending on the manufacturing criteria.

Criteria of a good quality bubble-type ripple mattress:

1. Light weight and easy for transportation. Suitable for short term usage.

2. Easy to install and use of the adjustment settings.

3. Low flame retardant level and easy to clean medical grade PVC bubble pad.

4. Adjustable hangers suitable for most bed types.

5. Pressure adjustable pump with a weight indicator reference to facilitate optimised pressure setting based on user’s body weight.

6. Extension flaps to be tucked under the standard mattress for stabilisation and fall prevention, especially important for those who are candidates for progressive mobility.

7. CPR straps to enable quick air deflation for emergencies, short term physiotherapy and moving and handling or storage.

8. Alternating Pressure Redistribution System (1-in-2) for ventilation and user’s comfort.

9. May come with or without a cover.

TUBE-TYPE RIPPLE MATTRESS

A tube-type ripple mattress is useful for the prevention of bed sores in bedridden patients at low to medium risk. By having a series of individual tube cells cyclically inflate and deflate alternatively, patient’s pressure is periodically redistributed by inflating and deflating tubes in order to mimic natural sleep movement patterns and avoid long term pressurization of tissue. This adds on an extra advantage of reducing disturbance to the patient due to shifting by carer. It is generally suitable for those with body weight 140kg or less depending on the manufacturing criteria.

Criteria of a good quality tube-type ripple mattress:

1. Light weight and easy for transportation and storage.

2. Easy to install and use of the adjustment settings.

3. Low flame retardant level and easy to clean medical grade PVC bubble pad.

4. The tube can be replaced if punctured or damaged.

5. Adjustable hangers suitable for most bed types.

6. Pressure adjustable pump with a weight indicator reference to facilitate optimised pressure setting based on user’s body weight.

7. Extension flaps to be tucked under the standard mattress for stabilisation and fall prevention, especially important for those who are candidates for progressive mobility.

8. Low-air-loss function to provide a good air ventilation flow in order to reduce the risk of skin breakage.

9. Alternating Pressure Redistribution System (1-in-3) for ventilation and user’s comfort by mimicking natural movement patterns.

10. Pillow function, in which tubes are designed to stimulate a regular stableness of a pillow which aid in patient’s compliance.

11. Should come with a nylon or PU cover to reduce ingress of unwanted fluid such as urine in between tubes. Cover should be flame retardant and non-irritant to skin.

1. CPR straps to enable quick air deflation for emergencies, short term physiotherapy and moving and handling or storage.

Having a good quality of life is important to all of us, especially when we are in our retirement age. It is awful if we have to go through this pain and discomfort caused by bedsores, that in fact, in majority of the case which are preventable. Having a ripple mattress is important for the prevention of bedsores, but choosing the right ripple mattress is equally important. Hope that the tips above can help you to choose the right ripple mattress for your loved ones.
